Bury St. Edmunds Bulldogs II faced a difficult challenge in the Cambridge Cup on Sunday, hosting a Lakenheath Eagles side flying high a division above them.
The hosts started well, controlling the defensive rebounds and passing the ball in attack to take a 9-6 lead. Then mistakes started to creep in and Lakenheath capitalised to finish the first quarter ahead 24-11.
The second quarter was one to forget for Bury. The Eagles guards increased the pressure on the Bulldogs’ ball handlers leading to steals and fast break scores. By half-time the home team were trailing 54-19.
The Bulldogs rallied in the second half. Using ball and player movement to create scoring opportunities and keep pace with the visitors throughout the third quarter. Playing for pride in the final period the home team worked hard but couldn’t get any closer, with Lakenheath running out 106-52 winners.
“We expected a challenge tonight and we were right” said Coach Glenn Collins after the game.
“I was pleased with our performance in the third quarter, and in other short spells we showed what we can do with defensive effort, player movement and quick passing. We need to do it for whole games though.”
