Bury St. Edmunds Bulldogs were away from home for the third consecutive Cambridge league game at St Neots on Monday.
Bury attacked from the off looking to get to the basket quickly but St Neots showed their ability to pass the ball well and score from the outside. Four 3 pointers from the home team helped them to a 21-13 first quarter advantage.
The lead extended to 12 early in the second quarter before Bury rallied behind layups and free throws from Dave Wise and Ash Read, then Andrew Borkett reduced it to a 6 point game with his first points for the club. Another 3 pointer at the death saw St Neots up 38-29 at half time.
The third quarter followed a similar pattern to the second; St Neots started the better and their lead had grown to 18 before the Bulldogs fought back to within 5 points. Yet another triple on the last possession left Bury trailing 58-50 heading into the final period.
The Bulldogs made one more push in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get any closer. A combination of an Ipswich League game the night before and St Neots’ passing game sapping the energy from their legs. Final score 79-66.
Coach Glenn Collins reflected after the game; “It was a game we feel we could have won on another day. Credit to St Neots though, they played very well as a team and passed the ball much better than us. They also hit a very high percentage of their shots and scored twelve 3 pointers. Some of these were at crucial times as we were gaining control of the game which knocked us back a bit.”
Dave Wise added “St Neots moved the ball well and made very few mistakes.”
