Bury St. Edmunds Basketball Club, sponsored by Kuda Automotive and Moreton Hall Community Centre, travelled to Nottingham Trent University Hoods in Division 3 East of the National Basketball League, falling to a disappointing 90-79 loss.
While the side were bolstered by the return of Billy Smith and the debut of Deividas Gorodeckis, Ashley MacDonald joined a growing injury list for the Suffolk side.
Bulldogs started brightly, as Adam Ball & Vytautas Girdzius led the charge to take a 7-0 lead, before Hoods rallied back with a 19-5 run, before Brandon Marshall’s late score saw Bulldogs trail 19-16 after one. The second quarter saw a stronger performance from the Bulldogs, as Matt & Ed Spurling got to the rim, and Girdzius and Ball kept the scoreboard ticking over, while Denby Ablard, Smith and Gorodeckis protected the glass en route to a 34-37 half-time lead. A nervy third quarter saw the game tied at 60 apiece, before Trent pulled away in the final period, fuelled by an 11-2 run in the opening three minutes of the quarter.
Leading scorers for Bury were Ball (25), Girdzius (16) and Matt Spurling (11).
“All credit to Hoods” said Coach Arron MacDonald “but frankly, we’ve thrown that one away. We’ve just not played our game in the final fifteen minutes today – and we’ve gone from a five-point lead to an eleven point loss. We need to play with a high level of effort, purpose and communication for forty minutes, we need to play to our strengths and execute; we haven’t done that today, and we’ve thrown away a win. There’s a lot that needs to be addressed – and quickly – before the visit of arguably the strongest team in the league next weekend.”
Up next for Bulldogs is the visit of Northamptonshire Titans on Saturday 16th November at Skyliner Sports Centre, with the Bulldogs U16’s hosting a triangular tournament from 11:00am.
