Following the recent launch of girls and women’s sessions from Bury St. Edmunds Basketball Club, the girls team Head Coach, Jo Brawn, and a number of the players attended the launch of Basketball England’s “All Girls” campaign at the WBBL Trophy weekend hosted by the University of Essex, with the campaign aimed at inspiring more girls and women to engage in the sport at all levels.
Members of the girls team took part in an on-court session featuring numerous current and former international players who compete in the WBBL – Britain’s Elite Women’s Basketball League, and met with Basketball England CEO Stewart Kellett, Great Britain Women’s Head Coach Chema Buceta and East Region Chair Angela Griffin, however, it was an unexpected plaudit for Coach Brawn which turned out to be one of the biggest highlights of the day…
Coach Brawn was given the honour of being the East Region’s first Ambassador for the All Girls Basketball campaign, recognising her outstanding commitment to growing the game of basketball for females in our area.
“I’m honoured to be recognised in this way” said Coach Brawn, “But it’s not just me – I wouldn’t have this recognition if it wasn’t for this wonderful club, and everyone in the Bulldogs family all working together to grow the game of basketball for our area. The disparity between male and female participation in sport is truly alarming, and the “All Girls” campaign is a great way to bring that to the attention of more people, and to show females the many different ways in which they can get involved, and stay involved, in basketball.”
Chair of East Region Basketball, Angela Griffin, nominated Coach Brawn and had this to say: “I saw Jo along with the players from the club, and right away, I knew she had to be an Ambassador. I’ve seen Jo coach before, and she’s a breath of fresh air! She’s a lovely young lady and a fantastic role model for girls looking to get involved in the sport. It was immediately clear to everyone that she is the kind of volunteer every club would love to have. For her work in schools and at her club, I’d like to say ‘thank you’, and encourage her to keep going!”
“We’re really proud of Jo, and we’re delighted that she’s a part of our club” said Head Coach Arron MacDonald. “For her to be the first Ambassador recognised by East Region for her dedication to female basketball is amazing, and it’s richly deserved for such a talented and passionate young coach. As a club, we’re committed to offering Basketball for All, and it’s been fantastic having Jo on-board to help us grow the basketball offering for females at the club and, in-turn, to help combat the disparity in sporting opportunities between males and females in our area.”
