Bury St Edmunds Bulldogs climbed back to the top of Cambridge League Division 2 with an 84-83 home win against Huntingdon Hawks 2 at Skyliner Sports Centre on Sunday. Both teams had double figure leads during a well matched game before being separated by a single point at the final buzzer. As in so many other games this season the Bulldogs took the early initiative and led 27-17 after one quarter. The balance of play then changed in the second quarter as Huntingdon fought back to within a point at halftime. The Hawks maintained their momentum in the second half with good ball movement and excellent shooting, and with six minutes left to play Bury were behind by 13 points. Some tactical defensive changes then made a difference as Bury first slowed down the Hawks drives to the basket then stopped their 3 point shooting. In the final two minutes the Hawks were scoreless allowing the Bulldogs to complete the comeback with just seconds to spare. “It was a great defensive team effort to finish the game,” said Bury Coach Glenn Collins afterwards. “We lacked sharpness for long stretches tonight and Huntingdon really punished us for it. That said we could have crumbled in the second half and I’m really proud of the character we showed to get back in the game.” Bury’s top scorer was Sonjay Williams with 27 points. Jason Sykes added 20 and Ernest Isokpehi 16, including 8 in the crucial final three minutes. The Bulldogs return to action away to third placed Cambourne Raptors on Thursday.
